Before treatment.

This portrait was very close to a household fire, and is covered by a heavy layer of soot. The paint of the face was softened and blistered by the intense heat. A few pieces of the fragile, blistered paint have fallen off, as seen under the eye.

Detail, before treatment.

After treatment.

Using techniques to prevent further paint losses, the painting was lined onto new canvas for support. The portrait was then cleaned and minor filling and in-painting was carried out, followed by a coat of non-yellowing varnish.
